Retaining your best talent

“Diversity brings people into the workforce, but inclusion is what helps retain them and make them feel like they’re part of the corporate culture.”

Alexander Alonso, Ph.D.

Chief knowledge officer at SHRM

Often, it is hard for organisations to retain their best talent. You may be doing everything right to retain your employees but the desired outcome may not be achieved. It is important to understand that employees leave well-paying jobs because they seek more than just financial compensation. Hence, workplace inclusion is key to employee retention.

Our research shows that employees who do not feel included in the workplace actively seek alternative job opportunities. Interestingly, these individuals were well-compensated in their current positions. When asked about their reasons for considering a job change, the lack of workplace inclusion emerged as the primary factor. As individuals spend a significant portion of their day at work, it becomes crucial for them to experience comfort and safety in their environment. The respondents expressed substantial dissatisfaction with their employers' handling of inclusion-related matters, indicating a need for improvement in addressing these concerns.

High employee turnover costs money and effort for any organisation. Additionally, it impacts the image of the organisation.

DEI is a strategic imperative for organisations. The fundamental need for employees is to feel included in the workplace. Creating a culture of inclusivity is essential to foster a sense of belonging, respect, and fairness among employees.
