Shamalka Perera, PhD
Principal Consultant
I have a wealth of experience and knowledge from living in and engaging with diverse cultures, both as a student and a traveler.
With a background in Human Resources Management (HRM), I developed a strong passion for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and their vital role in creating a more inclusive workplace environment. There was a pivotal moment in my life when I read an article by Shore et al., (2011) on 'Work group Inclusion'. The article discusses an inclusion-related theory called 'Optimal Distinctiveness Theory' (ODT) and how an individual feels included when their need for belongingness and uniqueness are equally satisfied. I was fascinated by the idea of how two opposing needs (the need to belong and the need to be distinctive) could make an individual feel included. I reflected on my own experience and realised that belonging is a fundamental need of every individual and that individuals like to retain their individuality at the same time. That's when I decided I'd want to help others feel like they belong in the workplace while embracing their authentic selves. To gain a better understanding of these concepts, I explored the experiences of inclusion among IT employees in New Zealand for my PhD.
With years of consulting experience in the education sector, I bring together my expertise and passion for DEI to help organisations drive positive transformations for both employers and employees. I have presented my research studies at international conferences to positive acclaim, published papers and I am a polyglot — speaking four languages including English and French.
With a strong commitment to my profession, my goal is to bring success to organisations by creating inclusive work cultures. I connect with people easily and work as a bridge-builder between employers and employees. Taking action on DEI will facilitate organisations to experience the benefits of DEI, such as enhanced job satisfaction, performance, productivity, innovation and low employee turnover.
I am also a mom who loves spending time with my little daughter.
